NDC constituency elections in Western Region praised for peaceful conduct

Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson has praised delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the peaceful conduct of the party’s constituency elections across the region.

The elections were held in all 17 constituencies to choose executives who will reinforce the party’s grassroots organisation and help coordinate its activities ahead of future political engagements.

Mr Nelson visited a number of polling centres to observe the process and said he was satisfied with both the progress of voting and the behaviour of delegates.

He congratulated party members for their conduct and called on all aspirants to remain united once the results were declared. Internal elections, he said, should help strengthen the NDC rather than create divisions within it.

The minister described the peaceful exercise as being in line with the NDC’s democratic principles and philosophy. He also stressed that unity among members would be important to the party’s continued growth.

Ahanta West arrangements

In the Ahanta West Constituency, 55 aspirants are competing for various executive positions, while two positions were uncontested.

Papa Adjobeah Acquah, the constituency’s Research and Elections Officer, said preparations had been completed to support an orderly voting process.

Delegates were required to present their identification cards for verification before receiving ballot papers. Mr Acquah also warned them not to take photographs of their ballots.

Voting was arranged by electoral area, with delegates expected to cast their votes when their respective areas were called.

The constituency had 1,647 expected voters, although Mr Acquah said the final turnout could be lower because some registered voters had died.

Seventeen executive positions were originally due to be contested. However, the Deputy Youth Organiser and Zongo Caucus Coordinator positions went unopposed.

The chairmanship, vice-chairmanship and women’s organiser posts each had four aspirants. Three candidates were contesting each of the substantive organiser, treasurer and deputy communications officer positions.

The remaining positions attracted between two and three candidates. A further 16 aspirants were competing for the eight-member Other Executive category.

Mr Acquah said he was confident in the arrangements and urged delegates to follow the guidelines governing the elections.

The constituency polls are part of the NDC’s internal democratic process for selecting leaders who will mobilise members, develop party structures and advance its political agenda at grassroots level.
