Dwight Yorke interested in Ghana job after Queiroz exit

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke says he would be interested in becoming Ghana head coach, believing the Black Stars have the players and footballing history to rebuild.

Yorke is among the names linked with the role following Carlos Queiroz’s departure on 1 October, although the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has not confirmed whether it has approached him.

“It’s a job I’d be interested in, given Ghana’s history and the players available,” Yorke told The Guardian.

Ghana are bottom of their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying group without a point after losing their opening two matches. They were beaten 2-0 away by Cote d’Ivoire before surrendering a two-goal lead in a 4-2 home defeat by The Gambia.

Those results have intensified concerns around a team that reached the last 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup before a 1-0 defeat by Colombia.

Yorke says Ghana’s difficulties are not limited to performances on the pitch and that the squad needs greater cohesion, organisation and a clearer identity.

“From the outside, Ghana sometimes looks disjointed,” he said.

“The talent is there. Build the culture and get the players to buy in and the football will follow,” Yorke added.

He also said accountability, transparency and consistency would be central to his management approach.

“I’d make sure that what I say is what I do,” he said.

The GFA has appointed Black Queens head coach Kim Bjorkegren to take temporary charge of the men’s side for their forthcoming 2027 AFCON qualifying double-header against Somalia.

Yorke, 54, has managed Australian club Macarthur FC and the Trinidad and Tobago national team. His first managerial assignment came in May 2022, when he coached the A-League All Stars against Barcelona in Sydney. More than 70,000 people attended the exhibition match, which Barcelona won 3-2.

He became Macarthur head coach in July 2022 and led the club to its first Australia Cup title three months later. He was dismissed in January 2023, after which a FIFA chamber ruled that Macarthur had ended his contract without just cause. The decision was upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 2024.

Yorke took charge of Trinidad and Tobago in November 2024, aiming to improve recruitment, revive interest in the national team and secure World Cup qualification. The country did not reach the tournament, but Yorke defended his work.

“I was given three tasks and completed two,” he said.

He also pointed to the recruitment of United States-born players with Trinidadian and Tobagonian heritage. Yorke believes Ghana could adopt a similar approach, citing Antoine Semenyo and Brandon Thomas-Asante as examples.

“I left Trinidadian football in a far better place than I found it,” he said.

For Yorke, strengthening trust between the technical staff and players would be as important as identifying eligible talent in the diaspora.
