Medeama lead Ghana Premier League as Hearts of Oak climb to second

Medeama extended their lead at the top of the Ghana Premier League with a 3-1 win over Heart of Lions, while Hearts of Oak returned to winning ways by beating newly promoted Port City 1-0 on Matchday Six.

The defending champions moved on to 14 points after their victory at the TnA Stadium, giving them a three-point advantage over Hearts of Oak.

Emmanuel Annor put Medeama ahead before Kingsley Braye scored twice in two minutes to put the result beyond doubt. Kofi Mawutodzi Agbadji scored for Heart of Lions, but the goal was not enough to prevent Medeama from strengthening their position as the early leaders.

Hearts of Oak ended a two-match winless run against Port City, with Frank Duku’s header deciding a closely fought match. The result lifted the Accra-based club to 11 points and second place, three points behind Medeama.

Port City, who were promoted this season, were unable to secure a positive result against one of Ghana’s established clubs.

Bechem United produced one of the weekend’s biggest comebacks by recovering from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Vision FC 4-2.

Yaw Acheampong scored the equaliser before Kofi Tompuo restored Bechem United’s lead late in the match. An own goal in stoppage time completed the scoring in a dramatic contest.

Young Apostles ended a run of three successive defeats with a 1-0 victory over Aduana FC. Samuel Prempeh converted a penalty shortly before half-time to settle the match.

The result also brought Aduana FC’s three-match winning streak to an end, halting their recent progress in the competition.

Berekum Chelsea moved out of the relegation zone after recording a 3-0 win over league debutants Debibi United. Stephen Kwakye, Dramani Awuah and Emmanuel Ofosu scored for the Bibires.

Bibiani Gold Stars also climbed clear of the relegation places after beating Basake Holy Stars 2-0 at Dun’s Park. Kwame Opoku scored both goals to move the Miners into 14th place.

FC AshantiGold 04 defeated Samartex 1996 1-0 in Obuasi, with Raphael Ankamah converting a 15th-minute penalty.

The victory ended Samartex 1996’s unbeaten start to the league season and extended AshantiGold’s home record to 18 consecutive league matches without defeat.

Karela United completed the weekend’s list of winners with a 1-0 victory over Dreams FC. Malik Abubakar scored the only goal, giving Karela their third successive home win.

After six rounds of fixtures, Medeama lead on 14 points, followed by Hearts of Oak on 11. Berekum Chelsea and Bibiani Gold Stars used their victories to move away from the relegation zone, highlighting the importance of every point as the competition continues.
