President John Dramani Mahama has discussed ways to strengthen Ghana’s partnership with India during talks with the country’s Minister for External Affairs, Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
The discussions covered trade, investment, railway development and pharmaceutical manufacturing, as well as broader efforts to expand economic cooperation between the two countries.
Mr Mahama said Ghana’s exports to India had increased from about US$3 billion to nearly US$7 billion. He also highlighted Ghana’s continued access to Indian agricultural machinery, automobiles and buses.
The two sides considered how closer economic ties could contribute to a fairer global order, including one that rejects unilateralism and the abuse of nations.
On healthcare, Mr Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s readiness to work with Indian partners to develop local production of medicines and vaccines. The initiative forms part of the health sovereignty objectives of the Accra Reset.
Dr Jaishankar passed on greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu. He said both leaders wanted Ghana and India’s comprehensive partnership to be given greater practical substance through new areas of cooperation.
The meeting is part of continuing efforts to develop the longstanding relationship between the two countries. Existing areas of cooperation include infrastructure, information and communications technology, health, trade and investment.
