JUSTIN FRIMPONG KODUA, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged President JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA to declare a state of emergency to address the growing crisis of illegal mining, known as galamsey, in Ghana.
Speaking on Asempa FM in Accra, Frimpong warned that galamsey is destroying the nation’s rivers, forests, and farmlands, posing a severe threat to public health and the environment.
He noted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), while in opposition, had called on the NPP to declare a state of emergency on galamsey, questioning why they are hesitant now that they are in power.
Frimpong asserted that Ghanaians voted against the NPP due to the NDC’s stance on galamsey, and he questioned what has changed.
He emphasized that declaring a state of emergency in areas prone to illegal mining would be a more effective solution than deploying troops to forest reserves.
