Gbenyiri Conflict: Dormaa East MP donates food and relief items to displaced persons in Dormaa Akwamu

The Dormaa East Member of Parliament, Honorable Rachel Owusuaa, has extended her support to over 20 internally displaced individuals from the Gbenyiri community. These individuals are currently seeking refuge in Dormaa Akwamu, a suburb within the Dormaa East District of the Bono Region, due to a conflict that has erupted in the Gbenyiri community in the Savanna Region.

During a visit to Dormaa Akwamu for a “Thank You” tour and to console the displaced persons, the Member of Parliament donated food and other essential relief items to those affected by the unforeseen circumstances in the Gbenyiri community. According to the Member of Parliament, the donation is intended to alleviate the immediate needs of the displaced individuals and provide them with some semblance of stability during this challenging period, as the government continues to work towards securing a lasting solution to the ongoing conflict.

As part of her “Thank You Tour, Hon Rachel Owusuaa extended her gratitude to Nananom and the residents of Dormaa Akwamu for their invaluable support in achieving her victory in the 2024 general elections.

She emphasized that the commitments made to the Nananom of Dormaa Akwamu during the campaign season, as well as the requests made by the Nananom for the enhancement of the community, have been documented, and efforts to address them have commenced.

She announced the initiation of construction work on toilet facilities, supported by Sammy Gyamfi, CEO of Ghana Goldbod, alongside efforts to commence the reconstruction of the school building that was destroyed by fire at Dormaa Akwamu a year ago.

Furthermore, she mentioned that the roads in Dormaa Akwamu have been included in the 10-kilometer road projects allocated to all Members of Parliament and so work on these roads will commence promptly once contractors are assigned to the site, thereby facilitating the development of Dormaa Akwamu and the broader Dormaa East District.

Nana Asante Krobea Poanohene, the Chief of Koradaso expressed concern regarding the ongoing illegal mining activities, known as Galamsey, in Dormaa Akwamu. He said the activities pose a threat to the security and safety of the community. Consequently, he is urging the government to support the traditional authorities in their efforts to combat these activities within the community.

Furthermore, he has advised the internally displaced individuals from Gbenyiri to conduct themselves with humility in accordance with the community’s laws and to abstain from any actions that may compromise the peace and security of Dormaa Akwamu and its surrounding areas.
