Kwame Baffoe Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has formally applied for political asylum outside Ghana, alleging persecution and threats to his life under President John Dramani Mahama’s government.
In his application, dated September 5, 2025, and reportedly dispatched to several embassies including those of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Côte d’Ivoire, Abronye, popularly called Abronye DC, claims he has been subjected to intimidation since February this year.
That month, he was summoned by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) after accusing the president of withholding GH₵550 million meant for dismissed government appointees.

According to his statement, he endured “unlawful arrest and detention” following his criticisms and has since been targeted with continuous threats. “Since my release, I have received persistent threats, both verbal and electronic, from individuals linked to the ruling party,” he alleged, adding that someone presenting himself as a police investigator warned he would be “dealt with mercilessly” if he failed to comply with future summons.
Abronye also accused Inspector General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno of focusing on silencing opposition figures instead of tackling broader national security challenges. His asylum plea further referenced the 1951 Refugee Convention and African Union protocols, arguing that his political activism places him and his family in “imminent and grave danger.”
The outspoken NPP chairman is also facing a GH₵20 million defamation suit filed by Dr. Randy Abbey, the acting CEO of the Ghana Cocoa Board, following corruption allegations Abronye made during a broadcast.
