Accra, Aug 28, GNA – The Ghana Medical Association on Saturday held a workshop on the New Labour Law to acquaint its members with the relevant provisions of the law that directly impact on their relationship with their employers.
The medical service under the New Labour Law has been declared an essential service.
This means health workers may not embark on industrial action, hence the workshop to give members knowledge about what is entailed in being declared an essential service.
Professor Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, the President of the Ghana Medical Association, said there was the need for the medical service to understand the full implications of the law to enable the members make meaningful contributions to the legislative instrument.
“We know in general that health is now an essential service but we are yet to learn the full implications of what an essential service is and its impact on the conditions of service of our membership.”
Professor Adu-Gyamfi said members must be educated on what options are available to them and the statutory processes through which to seek redress.
