Issahaku Recovery On Track But Too Soon for World Cup Qualifiers – GFA Communications Director

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has provided an update on Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, confirming that the winger is making steady progress in his recovery but will not feature in the Black Stars’ upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum explained that although the Leicester City forward has returned to action at club level, the national team’s technical staff have decided not to rush his reintegration.

“Otto Addo and his team are happy to see him back, but given the nature of his long layoff, they are being very cautious,” Asante Twum said in a Facebook update. “The medical teams from both Ghana and Leicester City have agreed it is best to give him more time before bringing him back into the squad.”

The 20-year-old spent several months sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, raising concerns about his readiness for high-intensity fixtures. Ghana’s next qualifier against Chad will be played in N’Djamena, a factor the GFA believes could pose additional risks for Issahaku.

“One reason for the cautious approach is the pitch in Chad,” Asante Twum added. “Playing on AstroTurf could be dangerous for a player just coming back from a knee injury.”

Despite missing the September qualifiers, Issahaku remains a key figure in Ghana’s long-term plans as the Black Stars push for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
