NPP Deputy Organiser Brutally Attacked at Ablekuma North Rerun

Violence erupted at the St. Peter’s Polling Station in Odorkor on Friday during the parliamentary rerun in Ghana’s Ablekuma North Constituency, leaving the Deputy National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, badly beaten and sparking panic among voters.

The incident unfolded as a group of unidentified individuals stormed the polling centre in what appeared to be a coordinated attack, targeting key figures from the NPP. A widely circulated video on social media shows Asamoah being overwhelmed, dragged to the ground, and kicked repeatedly by attackers alleged to be affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Eyewitnesses said the assault brought the voting process to a sudden halt as chaos gripped the area. Electoral officials and security personnel struggled to regain control while many voters fled the scene in fear.

The Ghana Police Service has yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but the Electoral Commission is reported to have suspended voting at the station pending further security assessment.

The rerun in Ablekuma North was ordered by the Electoral Commission after disputes over the December 2024 parliamentary election results. However, the process has been overshadowed by a series of violent incidents, including earlier attacks on former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson and NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie.

Political tensions remain high as the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and opposition NPP trade accusations over responsibility for the unrest.
