Health Ministry sets up donation desk for medical equipment

Ghana’s Health Ministry has established a Donation Desk to facilitate tax exemptions on medical equipment and materials donated from outside the country.

Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, announced the initiative to the Parliamentary press corps in Accra, saying it would enable the Ministry to pursue tax waivers on such donations for the benefit of Ghanaians.

Interested individuals and organisations can contact the Donation Desk via the hotline: 0204611611.

Meanwhile, the Minister briefed Parliament on the COVID-19 outbreak at the University of Ghana campus, assuring Ghanaians that there was no cause for panic.

“We know how to manage it,” Mr Akandoh said, noting that the Omicron variant spreads fast but is mostly mild.

According to the Minister, there were 316 suspected cases and 107 confirmed cases at the university campus, with no deaths or hospital admissions recorded.

The outbreak is believed to have been exacerbated by recent Hall Week celebrations at the university, where COVID-19 safety protocols were not adhered to.

The Ministry is working closely with the university to sensitise the community on COVID-19 safety measures and to manage the situation.

Mr Akandoh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing necessary support, including stockpiling vaccines and personal protective equipment (PPEs), to help the university manage the outbreak.
