Blood Bank appeal for more support

Koforidua, July 14, GNA – Mr Emmanuel Bonney, head of the Koforidua Regional Hospital Blood Bank, has appealed to individuals and organisations to assist the unit with funds to enable it purchase a vehicle to facilitate the collection and storage of sufficient blood. He also urged individuals such as the aged who could not donate blood to assist the unit with money for the purchase of materials such as blood bags and beverages for donors.

Mr Bonney made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the performance of the Blood Bank at Koforidua. He said during the second quarter of the year the unit was able to provide blood for 638 patients at the Hospital and supplied some to other hospitals in the region.

During the period the blood bank collected 425 units of blood from schools and colleges in the region and 62 units from voluntary blood donors.

My Bonney said the Bank collected only 253 units from voluntary blood donors because its vehicle broke down.

He said though the number of voluntary donors was increasing, the quantity of blood was too small to meet the high demand.
