Otaakrom Zongo community puts up an Islamic JSS block

Otaakrom (Ash), May 21, GNA – The Otaakrom Zongo community near Nyinahin in the Atwima district of Ashanti has so far spent over 90 million cedis to put up an Islamic Junior Secondary School (JSS) block. The Atwima district assembly provided building materials estimated at over 50 million cedis towards the project, which is expected to cost about 160 million cedis.

Mr Kwasi Afriyie-Dante, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Atwima-Mponua also donated 55 bags of cement from his share of the common fund. Mr B. Agyarkwa-Bekoe, head teacher of the Islamic basic school who led newsmen to inspect the project, said residents of the Zomgo community contributed 50,000 cedis each, in addition to offering regular communal labour.

The community also organised fund-raising activities and made voluntary contributions towards the project, which has reached the lintel level. Meanwhile, Madam Margaret Twumwaa, head teacher of the Local Authority Primary School has appealed to the Otaakrom residents to assist the school authorities to pull down the old and abandoned kindergarten school block, which has become a death trap.

Madam Twumwaa said the building poses a serious threat to the lives of the school children and the teachers, stressing that, any delay to pull down the building would cause a serious disaster. Mr Joseph Gyimah, head teacher of the Local Authority JSS, was not happy about the allegation by some parents that some of the teachers attend classes drunk and said such unsubstantiated allegations not only demoralise the teachers but also impugn on their image and credibility which greatly affect teaching and learning.
