Sunyani, May 19, GNA – Mr Atta Amponsah Frimpong, an aspiring NPP candidate for the Dormaa West parliamentary seat in Brong Ahafo has called for peace and tolerance in the area.
“I am a man of peace and we need to be tolerant in our political activities since democracy is about tolerance,” he told journalists in Sunyani on Tuesday.
Mr Frimpong, who was the constituency chairman of the NPP, was reacting to concerns expressed by some people that he should have resigned his position before filing his nomination papers to contest the primaries in accordance with the party’s constitution.
He said he resigned this position before the vetting of the party’s Brong Ahafo parliamentary candidates, which took place in Sunyani on Tuesday and said his decision to contest the seat was “a call to higher service” and could not fail the people.
He said he would hand over the mantle to the first vice-chairman, Mr James Yeboah Asuamah, Headteacher of Amasu Junior Secondary School in the Dormaa District.
“I want to inspire other party members to aspire to take up more challenging positions,” he said, and debunked the notion by some sources that he had infringed the party’s constitution by not stepping down before filing his nomination papers.
The aspirant, who is head of the English Department at Dormaa Secondary School, explained that the party’s amended constitution, which demanded that party officers resigned their posts before contesting as candidates for the parliamentary election, had not come out at the time nominations were opened.
Other NPP contestants for the seat are the incumbent MP, Mr. Yaw Asiedu Mensah and Mr. Kwaku Agyeman Manu, Deputy Minister of Finance.
