Lawyers urged to support Ghana Bar Association

Accra, April 7, GNA – Mr Justice George Kingsley Acquah, Chief Justice, on Wednesday called on Lawyers to support the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to educate the public on various laws in order to combat abuses of fundamental human rights and further democratic governance.

The Chief Justice made these remarks at the enrolment of 10 Lawyers – four females and six males – at the Supreme Court in Accra.

He asked the newly trained Lawyers to be motivated and guided by the ethics of their profession and not money, adding, “you are duty bound to defend the poor and less privileged in the society”.

He also reminded of them of the authority of the General Legal Council, which had powers to debar them from practising should they misconduct themselves and advised them to comport them themselves in their dealings.

The Chief Justice, who presented them with their certificates, asked them to abide by the rules of the profession in order to uplift the image of the General Legal Council.

Those who were called to the bar include Miss Afua Adubea Donkor; Miss Josephine Hughes; Miss Mercy Louis Ohene and Miss Sandra Thompson. The rest were Professor Grady Jessup; Mr Kofi Nyanteh Akuffo; Derrick Donald Gwira Junior; Charles Owusu Juanah; Mr Kofi Osei-Ameyaw and Mr Patrick Ametey Sorgbodjor.

Present at the ceremony were Paapa Owusu Ankomah, Minister for Justice and Attorney – General, Mr Kweku Andah Asare, Director Ghana Law School and other executive members of the General Legal Council.
