City guards not strong enough to perform tasks – Accra Mayor

Mayor of Accra, Mohamed Adjei Sowah has stated that government will help improve the capacity of city guards in order to aid the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) in their operations to enhance safety on our roads.

Speaking at a Press Conference held by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly in Accra, he stated that the Metropolitan City Guards are growing old hence not strong enough to carry out the task of ensuring road safety and discipline effectively.

He also stated that road safety bye-laws will be enforced to ensure proper checks on road users.

The Mayor, however, noted that government is ready to fund the reconstruction of bad roads as well as the establishment of proper road designs to reduce accidents on our roads, adding that, government loses 1.6 percent of GDP to
road crashes.

He stressed on the commercialization of motorcycles in the city and cautioned “Okada men” who move about recklessly on our roads to desist from such acts else suffer penalties accordingly.

He urged all road users to obey traffic rules and also practice all road safety regulations such as the use of helmets, seatbelts, child restraints and pedestrian footbridges.
