Akufo-Addo forced Issahaku out – NDC

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has alleged that the resignation of Dr. Abdul-Nashiru Issahaku as the governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) was politically motivated.

Dr. Issahaku who was appointed by former president John Mahama last month resigned as head of the Central bank.

According to him, his resignation barely a year at post was purely based on personal grounds and that the government did not forced him out.

“They [government] did not force me out. It’s a personal decision,” he said in an interview with the state-owned Daily Graphic.

For the NDC however, Dr. Issahaku’s sudden exit following the change of government was politically motivated and that under the Akufo-Addo led NPP “several professional career public servants have been forced out of office.”

“A typical example is the manner in which the governor of the Bank Of Ghana (BoG) [Dr. Abdul-Nashiru Issahaku] has been prevented from completing his office and forced to resign from office prematurely,” the National Chairman of the NDC, Kofi Portuphy told a press conference Wednesday.

Dr. Issahaku until his appointment, was a Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana. He replaced Dr. Kofi Wampah.

He worked with the World Bank as a Senior Public Sector Specialist; the African Development Bank (ADB) as a Principal Governance Expert and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa as a Development Management Officer.

He was a Socio-Economic Advisor and Project Coordinator for the Canadian International Development Agency as well as working as a Senior Planning Analyst with Planning Analyst with Ghana National Development Planning Commission. Akufo-Addo has since appointed a lead regional economist of the African Development Bank Dr. Ernest Addison as the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
