Four Chinese ‘galamseyers’ arrested; guns, bullets impounded

The Eastern regional Police Command has arrested four more Chinese nationals engaged in illegal mining in Akyem Topreman near Akwatia in the Denkyembour District.

The 30 armed Police Contingent also retrieved a box of 155 BB cartridge ammunitions, a pump action gun and a locally made single barrel gun. The Police team also impounded five excavators and two Toyota Pickups, which have been taken to the regional Police headquarters in Koforidua.

The special operation was carried out on April 8, 2017. The suspects are currently being processed for court.

The latest arrest brings to 12 Chinese nationals arrested for engaging in illegal mining while a total of 10 excavators have been impounded within two weeks in the region.

According to the Eastern regional Police Commander, ACP George Alex Mensah, the regional Police Command has kick-started the fight against illegal mining which has degraded arable lands and polluted several river bodies.
