Parliament debates menace of youth alcoholism in Ghana

Parliament is considering passing a bill to tackle the menace of youth alcoholism in the country.

Debating the issue on the floor of parliament, concerns were raised over how young men and women destroy their lives over the menace of alcoholism.

“As legislators, it is imperative that we do something about the most common and biggest medium; Advertisements. Hundreds of advertisements on alcoholic beverages are aired on radio and television daily. And as if that is not enough, they are displayed on huge billboards as well as small ones. The alcohol industry is conscious of the power of advertisements so they waste no time in investing heavily in…. illicit alcohol,” member of parliament for Ashiaman revealed.

So far, dealers of alcohol have praised government for the effecting of a national policy on alcohol beverages – a development they say will reduce the instance of persons being victims to the old-age liquor.

Excessive alcohol consumption remains one of the leading causes of death in the country and across the world.
