EC educates public on importance of voters’ registration

Koforidua, March 2, GNA – As part of educational drives towards the impending registration of voters, the Electoral Commission (EC) in collaboration with the USAID and KAB consult, has embarked on activities to educate the public on the importance of the exercise.

A programme was organised in Koforidua on Monday for English Language teachers to assist in educating the public on the exercise.

Mr. Eric Mensah-Bonsu, the Deputy Regional Director of the EC, urged the participants to be ambassadors of the Commission by educating the public on the need to help the EC to compile a credible voters’ register and advised aliens and Ghanaians below 18 years not to participate in the exercise.

Some of the teachers, however, complained that they have received instructions from their District Directors of Education, debarring them from taken part as registration officials.

Mr Mensah-Bonsu took this advantage to appeal to such Directors to permit their teachers to work for the Commission since the exercise is a national exercise, which calls for the use of very efficient, effective and reliable officials to ensure the provision of reliable and verifiable registers.
