Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. says there should be a reform in the composition of the Parliamentary Appointments Committee.
Speaking on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Kwesi Pratt expressed worry over some members of the Appointments Committee, wondering why Ministerial nominees are on the Committee.
According to him, this culture doesn’t help the vetting process.
“The nominees are part of the Committee which is vetting them. I can’t understand it . . . I’ve thought about it but can’t understand it,” he said.
He called on the legislative body to review the Committee and ensure that any person who is appointed by the President as Minister-designate or Deputy Minister-designate either recuses him/herself or is not part of the Committee.
To him, maintaining the nominees on the Committee to vet other nominees is unprincipled, “we’ve done this from 1993 till date. Won’t we change it . . . There ought to be some level of seriousness in the vetting process.”
Mr. Pratt however commended the Parliamentary Appointments Committee, saying this year’s vetting process is “superior to previous vettings”.
