Court grants fake landlady 80 million cedis bail

Accra, Jan. 23, GNA- Betty Sanful, a petty trader at the Kaneshie Market, charged with defrauding 22 persons of several millions of cedis under the pretext of providing them with accommodation was on Friday granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court.

The court, presided over by Mrs Elizabeth Ankumah granted her bail for 80 million cedis with two sureties.

The accused who has pleaded not guilty is to re-appear on February 6, this year.

Police Inspector Albert Akpey said Betty is a self-styled landlady who managed to convince several people seeking for accommodation that she had rooms for hiring.

Prosecution said sometime last year, Betty collected various sums of money between 1.2 million cedis and eight million cedis each from the complainants under the pretext of renting rooms to them but she failed to do so.

The accused on interrogation allegedly admitted the offence and pleaded to be given time to refund the money to her victims, which she has also failed to do. 23 Jan 2003
