The Wisconsin International University College, Ghana, has received accreditation to offer a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.
The University, which is affiliated to the University of Cape Coast, was granted accreditation by the National Accreditation Board to offer the Nursing Degree programme on 29th March, 2016.
A statement copied to the Ghana News Agency said the University’s vision was to develop a Nursing Educational Centre of Excellence to provide exceptional professional nurses who were marketable globally.
The programme would be officially launched at an inauguration ceremony on 9th May, 2016 at the University’s main campus at North Legon, Accra.
The statement said the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana, the professional body responsible for the training and regulation of nurses and midwives in the country, had also given its stamp of approval to the programme, the institution’s facilities and lecturers.
The Nursing Centre of Excellence is endowed with a fully-equipped skills laboratory that simulates a real-life ward, a well-stocked library and access to leading electronic databases, modern air-conditioned classrooms with cutting-edge technology and visual teaching aids.
“The Centre of Excellence is also equipped with sign language facilities to enable nurses to communicate with persons with hearing and speech impairments, a low student-to-instructor ratio, disabled access to classrooms and the skills laboratory, an on-site physician on call and an on-site sick bay,” the statement said.
The statement quoted Dr Carl R. Arrow, the Dean of the School of Nursing, said: “Wisconsin’s Department of Nursing’s mission is to produce professional nurses with broad-based knowledge and expertise for the management of contemporary health problems.
“Nurses trained at Wisconsin will be able to provide the highest level of preventive, curative, promotive and rehabilitative nursing care at all levels of the healthcare system to individuals, families and communities,” Dr Arrow said
Admissions are currently underway for the Summer Semester, which starts on 11th May, 2016.
Eligible applicants include senior high secondary school leavers, healthcare assistants, and community or enrolled nurses, who would enter the programme at level 100.
Holders of a Diploma in Nursing, professional nurses and State Registered Nurses would be placed at level 200 or higher.
The statement said mature applicants who were non-nursing professionals could also apply, provided they met the minimum entry requirements.
