President John Dramani Mahama has assured the people of Manya Krobo in the Eastern Region of continued support from government with more development projects.
Addressing a gathering at Odumase Krobo as part of his ‘Accounting to the People’ tour in the region on Tuesday, 12 April 2016, the president said he appreciated their continuous support of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“I will not take your support for granted. What is due you as your fair share of the national cake, I will make sure that you get it,” he promised.
According to him, rural electrification projects in the region, especially in Upper Manya, will commence in August this year.
He indicated that development of educational facilities in the area was key for his government, adding that the University of Environment and Sustainable Development, which is sited in the region, will focus on research to promote development in that part of Ghana.
“We have legislation of the Eastern University currently before parliament and that university in Kroboland will make the area a citadel of education in Ghana. It will specialise in Environmental Studies and Agriculture. We know majority of residents [here] are farmers and it will focus on research to help productivity,” Mr Mahama said.
In addition, the president noted that: “A two-storey girls’ dormitory block at Akro Senior High School (SHS) is under construction. We are working on a three-storey dormitory for boys at the Manya Krobo SHS, and several classroom blocks at Agormanya Junior High School (JHS), Yekuyem D. A. Primary School, and others.”
Mr Mahama explained that a six-unit classroom block is being built at Akuse and a new assembly complex will soon be completed for Krobo Girls Senior High School.
The president identified skills training as an important intervention for the youth to create employment opportunities and noted that under the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET) programme, government will expand training for the youth in the area.
President Mahama said through the Kpong water expansion project, potable water had been provided for the community and its surroundings.
He also stated that: “The road from Trom to Kpong is being constructed; we are also working on the town roads in both Odumase and Somanya. We have asked the contractor to speed up work on the Somanya to Kpong roads as well.”
In a speech read on his behalf, the paramount chief of Manya Krobo Traditional Area, Nene Sakite II, thanked the president for the projects in the area and appealed for the construction of some specific roads, which he said would boost commercial activity in the area.
Some of the roads include the Greenwich Meridian road, Government Hospital road, Akosombo-Tema road and the Asesewa road.
