Kenyasi holds science workshop for girls

Kenyasi (B/A), Sept 3, GNA- A weeklong Science Technology and Mathematics Education (STME) Clinic for 63 students from schools in the Asutifi District has ended at Kenyasi in Brong Ahafo. The clinic, sponsored by Mr Paul Okoh, Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, ACTIONAID Ghana and Asutifi District Assembly, has the theme, “STME in support of Science and Technological Transformation of Ghana.”

Miss Mercy Amankwah, Brong Ahafo Regional Coordinator for the clinic, said the programme has, since its inception, recorded improvement in girls’ performance in mathematics.

She appealed to stake holders in education to adopt pragmatic strategies aimed at stemming the deep-seated phobia for mathematics and sciences among female students.

Mr Yaw Manu Yeboah, the District Director of Education, said the programme has improved girls’ enrolment in schools but the dropout rate of girls is still more than that of boys in the district. He said 307 out of 399 girls excelled in mathematics and science at the 2003 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) with the girls scoring 88 percent as against 83 per cent by the boys.

There was an experiment by students from O.L.A. Girls Secondary School at Kenyasi on the extraction of alcohol from cassava in addition to its traditional gari and starch products. 03 Sept. 03
