Teachers and students of Oda Senior High School (ODASCO) have received awards from the “Amissah Arthur Leadership prize” scheme during the celebration of the school’s 55th Speech and Prize Giving Day.
The 60 award winners received prizes in the academic performance, well-behaved and hardworking categories.
The prize is an initiative introduced in 2013 by the Vice President Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah Arthur who is an old student of ODASCO.
It is aimed at rewarding students and teachers who show exemplary leadership and discipline that inspire other staff and students to emulate them.
The theme for the Speech and Prize Giving Day was: “ODASCO at 55 – The Role of Stakeholders.”
Professor Dora Edu Boahen, a Lecturer at the Science Faculty, University of Cape Coast, who was the guest speaker, said moral upbringing is very essential in every child’s life.
She therefore urged teachers and parents to do well to inculcate in the students discipline and decency to uplift the image of schools.
She advised girl students to demystify the myth about science and study the subject at higher levels of education.
Mr Francis K. Appiah, the Headmaster, said the school was established in 1960 with 95 students but now has a population of 2,242 students with 152 teachers including non-teaching staff.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview, Mr Appiah said the school last year chalked out 90.5 per cent in the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination.
He said: “The school cadet corps placed seventh out of 20 schools at the regional competition in Koforidua and in basketball inter-school competition boys division the school won.”
Mr Appiah commended teachers, parents and stakeholders for their immense contributions to the school.
He appealed to organisations and individuals to come to the aid of the school, particularly with the provision of computers, school buses, mono desks and boys’ dormitory.
Mr William Agyapong Quaittoo, the Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, inaugurated a six-seater toilet facility for the girls at the cost of GH?40,000.00 from his share of the District Assemblies Common Fund.
