Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region say they are not enthused at the attempt by President John Mahama to nominate one Charlotte Odum as the new Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for Sekondi-Takoradi.
Three persons including Capt Cudjoe, Henry Abbey Hart and Charlotte Odum, all active members of the party were shortlisted for the post.
President Mahama who has the sole prerogative to appoint MCEs, has accordingly nominated Madam Odum as the new MCE for Sekondi-Takoradi.
However, members of the NDC claimed at a press conference held in Sekondi yesterday that the best choice for the MCE position, was Capt (rtd) Anthony Cudjoe, the former Mayor for the area who was asked to hand over after his four year tenure of office as MCE ended.
According to the NDC members, nominating a new person as MCE would have dire consequences on the party in the upcoming 2016 general elections.
They have therefore appealed to the president to, as a matter of urgency rescind the decision of nominating Madam Charlotte Odum as the Metropolitan Chief Executive with immediate effect.
They alleged that some activists who had petitioned the President not to re-nominate Capt Cudjoe, did not do that in the larger interest of the party.
“We want to use this medium to appeal to the conscience of President Mahama to re-nominate Capt (Rtd) Cudjoe as MCE”, they indicated.
Larry Ahenkorah-Gyima, Effia Constituency Secretary of the NDC who addressed the journalists revealed that Capt Cudjoe contested the Sekondi seat in the year 2000 and 2012 and managed to increase the NDC’s votes from about 6,000 to 14,000, which was an unprecedented figure in the Sekondi constituency.
“We humbly appeal to President Mahama to re-nominate the former mayor to continue his service to the people”, he stressed.
The NDC activists, after the press conference marched to the Regional Coordinating Council to present a petition to the Regional Minister, Paul Evans Aidoo.
