President John Dramani Mahama, on Thursday said Government’s pledge to ensure the country had good roads was still in force and assured the people of Bolgatanga and Bawku that the road linking them would soon be rehabilitated.
The President said this in reaction to concerns raised by the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs during a meeting with them in Bolgatanga.
The President’s two day tour of the Upper East Region, named, Changing Lives and Transforming Ghana Tour is the sixth of the President’s regional tours, aimed to consult, pay respect and inform the traditional authorities of the renewal of his mandate to contest the 2016 Presidential Elections on the ticket of the NDC Party.
He pledged government’s commitment to ensure speedy and efficient rehabilitation of the Bolgatanga-Bawku road and indicated that another part of the road would be awarded to a second contractor to boost spate of work on the road.
President Mahama said government had also prioritized the Navrongo -Funbisi roads for upgrading while the Navrongo -Chuchuliga – Tumu road was being constructed by Mawums Construction. The Tumu- Hien – Wa road had also been awarded, he added.
He noted that the Tamale-Bolgatanga road built during President Rawlings’ administration would also be re asphalted to extend its life.
He said the Eastern corridor roads from the Oti Bridge to Nakpanduri had been awarded to Brazilian Contractors who were working on it while funding was being sought by Government to do the Nakpanduri to Kulungugu stretch to ease travelling.
Other interventions the President enumerated were electricity, water and education.
He noted the challenges involved in extending electricity to all communities and blamed them on the sparse nature of the communities in the Region. He however assured the Chiefs that he was in touch with the Energy Ministry to ensure everybody enjoyed electricity.
He informed the Chiefs of a new Database system implemented to compile a list of all members of the NDC that will help boost the party’s fortunes in the 2016 elections.
He noted that under the new system, the Upper East Region registered 153,000 members who would vote in the forthcoming Parliamentary and Presidential Elections in 2016.
