Kumasi High Court Hands Armed Robber 120 Years Plus Life Sentence for Robbery and Murder

A notorious armed robber, Dominic Afriyie, popularly known as “GH,” has been sentenced to a total of 120 years in prison for armed robbery and life imprisonment for the murder of a Kumasi-based pharmacist and building contractor, Michael Dela Agbo Klu.

The ruling was delivered on Thursday, May 15, 2025, by Justice Abdul Razak at a High Court in Kumasi.

Afriyie, 36, was found guilty on two counts of robbery and one count of murder following a trial in which a seven-member jury unanimously upheld all charges.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command, in a statement signed by DSP Godwin Ahianyo, confirmed that the crimes occurred on November 20, 2021, at Atasemanso, a suburb of Kumasi.

Armed with a firearm, Afriyie stormed the home of Mr. Klu and his family, stealing two mobile phones, an ASUS Zenbook laptop, and GH¢1,500 in cash. During the violent robbery, Mr. Klu, aged 43, was shot and killed.

An extensive manhunt was launched, and on December 30, 2021, police received intelligence about a planned robbery in the same area.

Acting on the tip-off, officers mounted a surveillance operation that led to the arrest of Afriyie and three others in the early hours of December 31.

The suspects were intercepted in a Toyota Corolla with registration number AS 5970-20. A search of the vehicle uncovered two pistols and two single-barreled shotguns.

Further investigations revealed that although Afriyie was arrested with accomplices, he had acted alone in the deadly 2021 home invasion that led to Mr. Klu’s death.

Despite pleading not guilty to all charges, the court found Afriyie guilty based on what was described as “compelling evidence.”

He was subsequently sentenced to 120 years for the robbery charges and handed a life sentence for the murder conviction.

The verdict brings closure to a high-profile case that gripped residents of Kumasi and sparked renewed calls for strengthened security in residential communities.
