Transport Owners Without Documents To Pay Passengers’ Insurance

Owners of vehicles without valid insurance would be made to pay the claims of passengers in case of an accident, Mr. Kwasi Asare Bafuor, Assistant Superintendent of Police in charge of Apam District in the Central Region has said.

Speaking at a meeting with the Apam Branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) yesterday, he reminded the drivers and transport owners that it was an offence to operate without the necessary documents including road worthy certificate and driver’s license.

He said it was also an offence to open the door of a moving vehicle and asked driver’s mates to desist from the practice. They should also stop washing vehicles on the roads since it reduced their lifespan. ASP Bafuor warned them against overloading and speeding, which he said contributed to accidents.

They should avoid in-secured loading where cargo and passengers are put together. He described driving under the influence of alcohol as the worse traffic offence and advised the Union to take measures to check the practice.

Mr. Yaw Adu Asamoah, Gomoa District Coordinating Director, advised the drivers against parking, loading and discharging passengers outside the station to avoid paying Park tolls. He asked them to patronise the District Assembly sticker and warned that those without them would not be allowed to operate in the district.
