Police asked to show restraint on seatbelt law

Alhaji Essa Antie Tetteh, Kpone-Katamanso District Chief Executive, has appealed to the Ghana Police Service to show restraint with ‘trotro’ vehicles in the implementation of the fastening of seatbelt law.

He said even though the law must be implemented, some commercial vehicles were created without the facility for passengers and it would take some time to wipe them out of the system.

Alhaji Tetteh, a former Greater Accra Region Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), made the appeal in an interview with Ghana News Agency during the election of branch executives of the Union.

He urged drivers to exercise restraint while on the road and also be polite in their transactions with passengers.

Mr Iddrisu Tetteh, Regional Vice Chairman of the GPRTU, who retained his seat as Kaneshie-Achimota Branch Chairman, appealed to the various branches to strengthen their bond with their executives.

He called on the drivers to cultivate a maintenance culture to prolong the lifespan of their vehicles and ensure the safety of the passengers.

Mr Fred Boateng, who also won his seat for the third time as Chairman of the Burma Camp branch in an interview with the GNA, said he has initiated a welfare fund to cater for the needs of the drivers.

He said majority of the drivers were not fortunate to reach far in their academic pursuits but as they were determined to place their children higher on the educational ladder, they are being supported from the fund.

Mr Boateng said discipline is high among the members and there is hardly any misunderstanding between the mates, drivers and passengers.

The elections so far held for some branches in the region were Baatsonaa-Lashibi, Accra-Somanya, Abeka-Lapaz, Accra-Akim Oda, Odor Taxi, Accra-Tema Branch ‘2’, Prampram Taxi and Burma Camp Taxi.
