Community completes school and health structures

Two projects – a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Compound and a computer laboratory block with a staff common room and residential accommodation for teachers have been inaugurated at Nkwantakese in the Afigya-Kwabre district.

The chiefs and people of the sprawling Afigya-Kwabre community used their own resources to complete the structures at a total cost of GH¢122,000.00.

Nana Boakye Yam II, the chief, said the CHPS Compound would not only help the people in the town to have access to quality health care but would also serve the health needs of other nearby communities – Patase, Penteng, Esaase, Danase and Akrofrom.

The people of the community decided not to depend on government to provide every development need and initiated steps to tackle some of their pressing development challenges.

He said they had already given decent accommodation to 12 teachers and had been organizing evening classes for school children in the community.

Nana Boakye Yam said education was one of their key priorities and would therefore go all lengths to create the right school environment for smooth teaching and learning.

In line with this, they have started the construction of additional classrooms to ensure adequate space for kids at the kindergarten and the junior high school (JHS).

He said as part of measures to check teenage pregnancy in the area, they had formed a “Purity Girls’ Club”, to discourage young girls from pre-marital sex.

Mr. Kwaku Oppong-Kyekyeku Kaakyire, the District Chief Executive (DCE), saluted the chiefs and people for their self-help spirit and advised parents to enroll their children in school.

He urged the teachers to be inspired by the efforts of the community and work hard to raise academic performance.

Nana Marfo Amaniampong, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Afigya-Kwabre North, pledged 100 bags of cement towards the building of the additional classrooms and three desktop computers for the school.
