Women, disabled urged to participate in assembly election

The Eastern Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr Alex Sackey, has called on women and the physically challenged to take active interest in the district level elections.

He expressed concern about the low turnout of the electorates in the local governance elections since its introduction in 1982 and urged the district assemblies who are the end users of the outcome of the election to contribute towards the education campaign to ensure people’s participation in the elections.

Mr Sackey made the call at a discussion on the eighth local level elections to be held on the on March 3 which was organized by the NCCE.

He advised the stakeholders of the election to intensify their educational campaign to ensure the right people were elected to strengthen the local governance system for accountability and effective running of assemblies.

Mr Sackey said out of the 2,637 people contesting the district assembly elections in the region only 157 are women, representing six percent and 497 women out of 4,972 are contesting the unit committee elections which represent 10 percent.

The Kwahu West Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Alex Somuah Obeng, advised the people to get involved in the election to be part of the grassroots decision making process.

As part of the programme, there was a durbar and a drama at Odumase near Nkwakaw to educate the people of the need to get involved in the elections.
