Notorious car snatcher arrested

A hot chase by brave policemen at the SWAT Unit has led to the arrest of a notorious car snatcher in Kumasi.

Kwadwo Poku and his cohorts were offering stolen cars for sale on January 9 when the police rushed to the scene to arrest them to face the law.

Immediately he saw the policemen, Poku escaped in a waiting taxi but he was given a hot chase by the brave policemen.

At a point in the chase, Poku jumped out of the taxi and scaled a tall wall but the police followed suit and grabbed him.

The police found three stolen taxis on Poku whose accomplices – Bismarck and Ebenezer, escaped arrest and are on the run.

The cars retrieved from Poku were Opel Astra, registered GT 9827-13, Kia Rio, GR 6958-11 and Nissan Micra, which is without registration number.

The Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, ACP Ampofo Duku, said a Nissan Micra car snatched at Trede on January 8 was identified as one of the three stolen cars in Poku’s possession.

According to him, the driver in charge of the Nissan Micra cab was slapped from behind by two men who hired his vehicle.

The driver became dazed after the hefty slap and the two men then snatched his car and pushed the driver away before speeding away.

The following day, the police had information that some young men were selling cars at a certain location in the city, so the police rushed there.

Poku upon seeing the policemen fled but he was overpowered by the brave policemen who arrested him after a long chase.

ACP Duku said one Eric Mensah had identified Poku as one of the suspects who snatched his taxi registered AE 5785-14.

He disclosed that the police are still investigating the case.
