Upper East students attend science Camp

Three hundred students from the 13 districts of the Upper East Region have ended a one week Science, Technology, Mathematics and Innovation Education Camp in Bolgatanga.

The students, who were from junior high schools, apart from being taken through topics including how to solve Science, Technology, Mathematics and Innovation Education problems practically, were also taken through Carrier Counseling, Road Safety including visiting industrial sites in the Region.

The Students also used the scientific knowledge acquired at the Camp to provide practical oriented problem-solving issues in the area on how to tackle sanitation problems, do away with weeds on farms and pomade making.

Exhibitions were also mounted by them showcasing their scientific works.

Closing the ceremony the Upper East Deputy Regional Minister, Mr Daniel Syme, commended the students for their zeal.

He said importing goods from foreign countries could be reduced if there were more scientists with the requisite expertise to turn the raw materials of the country into finished products.

“Without the requisite scientists with innovative skills to turn our abundant raw materials into finished Made-in-Ghana goods we will continue to export raw materials at cheap prices with its negative implications on our development”, he said.

He appealed to science and mathematics teachers to be more innovative by developing simple methods of teaching in order to demystify mathematics and science as difficult subjects meant for some special people.

Mr Emmanuel Zemakpe, the Regional Director of Education, appealed to the students to put into practice what they had learnt.
