Teacher unions urged to unite

Mr. Felix Essah Hienno, former headmaster of Okuapeman Senior High School, has called on the three teachers union, to form a formidable front for the improvement of their conditions of service.

He said Ghana National Association of Teachers, Ghana National Association of Graduate Teachers and Coalition of Concern Teachers Association are all fighting for the same aim but because of fragmentation, they are not achieving much.

Mr. Hienno made the call at the fourth Eastern Regional celebration of World Teacher’s Day at New Akrade in the Asuogyaman District on the theme: “Unite for Quality Education.”

He said there is the need for teachers and Ghana Education Service (GES) to form a harmonious relationship to ensure that the necessary resources, logistics and other motivations are provided to enhance the performance of the personnel.

Mr. Hienno appealed to GES to ensure that, capitation grants and government subvention for schools are paid on time to help promote effective teaching and learning.

The former headmaster called on GES officials to pay transfer grants and allowances to teachers to serve as motivation to them.

He said the quality of education is not the responsibility of only the teacher, but other stakeholders hence the need for all to come on board to ensure that, the personnel are equipped to deliver on their mandate.

Mr. Thomas Ampem Nyarko, Asuogyaman District Chief Executive said teachers must always be acknowledged for their enormous contribution to nation building, adding that, most have sacrificed for the profession by taking up teaching appointments in remote areas and under deplorable conditions.

He said, though, government is doing his best to ensure that education is effective; there is the need for all stakeholders to contribute their quota to the sector.
