Kofi Portuphy, the National Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has denied claims by the chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Kwabena Adjei that he is sharing rice, cooking oil, mattresses, among others, to woo the party’s delegates to vote for him to win the national chairmanship position.
During a press soiree by the United Cadres Front of the NDC in Accra a few months ago, Dr. Adjei reportedly stated that “my competitors can distribute rice and cooking oil, but it is not my pedigree to be distributing goodies because I know the history of this noble party.
Even though the NDC has not opened nominations, Dr Adjei is being challenged by Mr. Portuphy, the current vice chairman of the party and few others for the chairmanship position.
Speaking to the media after meeting NDC delegates from 23 constituencies in the Eastern region, Mr. Portuphy, who is popularly known as Mr. Pee, noted that “my massive support is not about the sharing of rice, cooking oil or money to delegates as being alleged by my main competitor but because of my commitment, dedication to the NDC since its formation as well as my good relations with the grassroots members.
He added that “politics is about offering good service to people, attending to their needs and finding solutions to the problems.
The NADMO boss stated that he was not surprised by the overwhelming endorsement by the party’s delegates across the country, particularly in Eastern Region.
Mr. Portuphy reiterated that if given the nod he would unite all members, especially the grassroots ones, adding that he would focus on unity, teamwork, accessibility and electoral victory.
This would enable the party to win every election under my leadership as mentioned during my campaign launch a few months ago, he said.
Mr. Portuphy said although the NDC won the 2012 elections, there was the need to build a formidable party that would retain power in the 2016 general elections.
Under my leadership, the electoral mechanism and structures that have been developed would be strengthened.
Delegates from 23 constituencies in the Eastern Region, including two Members of Parliament (MPs) for Upper Many Krobo and Lower Manya Krobo, Jeff Kavianu and Oklattey Teye Larbi respectively, declared their support for Mr. Portuphy.
Some of the delegates explained that the time has come for the party to elect leaders who are selfless, dedicated and supportive of the activities of grassroots members since elections are won at the grassroots level.
Some of the delegates, who were furious, accused the current crop of leaders of the party of neglecting the grassroots members after the 2012 general elections.
“When you even call them, they wouldn’t pick the calls, forgetting that we worked in remote areas for the party’s progress.
