Ghana-Ivory Coast maritime boundary case could swing either way – Aning

Security Analyst, Dr Kwasi Aning, has said it is premature to state emphatically that Ghana would win the maritime boundary dispute case filed against neighbouring Ivory Coast.

Ghana’s Attorney General Marrietta Brew Appiah-Oppong told Journalists at a press conference Tuesday, that the West African nation is certain of winning the arbitration case.

“We’re extremely confident in our case. I don’t think we’ll lose. Many laws support the position we’ve taken so I’m confident that it will go our way”, She said.

But speaking to STARR TODAY on STARR 103.5 FM, Aning opined that Ghana is only likely to win based on the arguments its lawyers put forward.

According to Aning, both countries have an equal chance of winning the case.

“Ghana must gird its loins for difficult negotiations”, Aning said adding “it is premature to state Ghana would win, both parties have a good case”.

Aning, however, laughed off suggestions that Ghana should seek the support of England to enable it win the case, since there are rumours that Ivory Coast is being backed by France.

He said the British cut off ties with Ghana after THE West African nation’s independence and can’t fathom how the British would back Ghana in this case unlike France which has maintained a very good relationship with Ivory Coast.
