The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Afigya-Kwabre, Mr Kwaku Oppong-Kyekyeku Kaakyire has defended the extended family system, saying, it offers the best form of social protection for the aged.
He said it should, therefore, be sustained and strengthened. He was speaking when he feted some senior citizens of the area at Boamang at the weekend.
More than 200 old men and women made up of traditional rulers, retired public and civil servants and farmers gathered to be treated to meals and drinks. The event was to show appreciation for their contribution to the development of the nation.
Mr Oppong-Kyekyeku said he found it troubling that the traditional way of doing things – holding families’ together and providing safety nets – is fast fading, and is being replaced by foreign cultures that adorn individualism and selfishness.
He called on the society to show respect to the senior citizens and support them to live in dignity. “They have paid their dues to the country and they deserve our recognition,” he added.
The DCE encouraged the elderly statesmen to share their experiences with those in leadership positions to enrich the political governance and move Ghana forward.
