MTTU records 78 accident cases in Upper West Region

The Upper West Region has recorded 78 road accidents from January to May this year, showing a decrease of 22 accident cases during the same period last year.

Statistics received from the Regional Office of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service showed that the Wa Municipality recorded 56 cases with15 deaths.

The Sissala East District registered nine cases with no death while Jirapa and Lawra Districts recorded four accident cases each, with no death. Six cases were also reported in the Nadowli District with four deaths.

The Sissala West District recorded one case with no death while two cases occurred in the Wa East District with one death.

Mr. Joseph Oppong, Deputy Superintendent of Police, said from the statistics, there had been a decrease in accident cases as compared to last year’s figure within the same period.

He attributed the decrease to hard work on the part of the MTTU and the adherence to traffic regulations by road users.

DSP Oppong, however, was dissatisfied about the interference by some government officials, which he said was not helping them in the effective operations of the MTTU.

He appealed to the public to report all accident cases to the police to enable the MTTU to keep an accurate data of accident cases in the region.
