Land, chieftaincy disputes plague Accra

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Sheik I.C. Quaye has said that the greatest headache of the region apart from armed robbery and crime is land and chieftaincy dispute.

According to Sheik I.C. Quaye ?from Langma which is close to Kasoa, to Tema, Ada, Dodowa and Amasaman, there appears to be no single town nor clan without chieftaincy and land dispute. He mentioned towns such as Weija, Oblongo, Bortianor, Aplaku Oshieye, Domeabra Ablekuma and Teshie as some of the flash points that make the security agencies unnecessarily busy.

Sheik Quaye made this known when he took his turn at the ?meet the press series? organised for regional ministers by the Ministry of Information.

The Regional Coordinating Council, according to the regional minister has identified the disrespect and disregard for stool elders and divisional as well as traditional council by chiefs, non-availability of documents on established procedure for election of traditional rulers and lack of clearly defined boundaries of stool lands for the various divisional stools in the traditional area as some of the causes of chieftaincy and land disputes.

To resolve such conflicts, the regional minister said the regional coordinating council has established a permanent Conflict Resolution and Management Committee to take steps to resolve all existing conflicts by negotiable settlement, arbitration and the employment of all possible and amicable techniques.
