Rainstorm renders hundreds homeless at Elmina

Hundreds of people were rendered homeless on Thursday when a torrential rainstorm hit Cape Coast, Elmina and their environs.

The storm, which lasted for about an hour, left in its trail extensive damage to properties at Elmina and its adjoining communities, including Amoanda, Bronyibima, Iture and Nkontrodo.

Some mud buildings were levelled to the ground whilst roofs suffered serious damage with many of them completely ripped off, however, no casualty was recorded.

The intensity of the storm uprooted trees along the Elmina-Takoradi highway, with some stems hanging dangerously, blocking the roads and causing heavy traffic, whist metal sign posts of various sizes and shapes were scattered around.

Some residents were seen busily cutting off the trees and demanding tips from motorists.

Mr Isaac Kweku Sam, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipal Chief Executive, on Thursday evening led a team including National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) officials to visit the affected persons and also assess the extent of damage in some of the communities.

The affected suburbs include Chapel Square, Seaview, Tatarmu, Boawoho Bridge and Damaabodo, all in Elmina.

Part of the roof of the Elmina Roman Catholic Boys Junior High School, electric poles and telecom masts were also vandalised by the storm.

Mr Sam tasked the NADMO office to quickly assess the situation for prompt action to be taken to help ease the victims.

In Cape Coast, some parts including the Tantri to Electricity Company streets were flooded.
