Sir John: Why did Mahama wear white on judgment day?

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, has insinuated that President John Mahama and the vice president may have known the election petition verdict ahead of the pronouncement by the Supreme Court on Thursday.

Sir John, as he is popularly known, told XYZ Breakfast Show host Moro Awudu on Friday August 30, 2013 that: “He knows best what went into all this. Indeed it amazes me that he and his vice president and all the people around him wore white even in the morning before the verdict came”.

In Ghanaian and other African cultures, adorning white clothing signifies victory, good omen or success.

Sir John, therefore, wondered if the president and the governing National Democratic Congress were privy to some information about the verdict which the rest of the country did not know.

“Perhaps they knew what the rest of the country did not know, we leave it to John Mahama and the rest of the country to answer,” Sir John said.

According to him, on the day of the verdict, “… If you went to NDC’s party headquarters, they had their sound systems and everything ready to jubilate”.

Mr. Mahama and his Vice Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur were seen draped in all-white apparel on Thursday, in anticipation of the Supreme Court’s pronouncement of final verdict on the long-drawn election petition case.

Sir John, who was recently convicted of criminal contempt by the same court over certain comments he made concerning the hearing, told the programme that despite the apex court’s affirmation of the president’s election as “valid”, Mr. Mahama himself does not believe he won the election.

“I am not sure John sees himself as the president of this country in spite of the fact that he has been congratulated by Nana Akufo-Addo,” Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie asserted.
