Gov’t to close media houses that foment Nkonya-Alavanyo conflict

Any media house that exaggerates or misreports the Nkonya-Alavanyo conflict will be closed down, the Government has threatened.

The measure is part of efforts toward mitigating the violence associated with the recurrent conflict in the Volta region.

Interior Minister Kwesi Ahwoi, who addressed Journalists at the Flagstaff House on behalf of President John Mahama on Sunday after a meeting between leaders of the rival factions, said the two sides have signed a peace accord aimed at ending the age-old conflict.

A recent resurgence of the conflict led to the slaughter of a two-month-old baby alongside two others.

The two sides have intermittently clashed over land and turf.

The latest disturbances necessitated an invitation of the factions to the national Capital, Accra for talks.
