Teachers in Sunyani embark on strike

Some pupils and students from basic and senior high schools in the Sunyani Municipality returned home when they realized their teachers had carried out their threat to start a strike action on Monday.

Some of them were seen playing, others were about to leave for home and the GNA noticed some of the teachers were conversing under trees.

The leadership of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) last Friday served notice that they would withdraw their services on March 18 if their concerns were not addressed.

These concerns included non-payment of vehicle maintenance allowances since 2012 and delay in resolving outstanding issues related to promotions.

Mr Boakye Yiadom, a staff of Sunyani Anglican Primary and JHS, told GNA that some teachers reported in the morning but refused to teach and left when they realised their colleagues failed to turn up.

He said some of the pupils returned home after waiting for a without teachers to teach them.

Mr Boakye Yiadom said he was was optimistic the strike could end soon for the teachers to prepare JHS students for their Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Master Kwame Ameyaw, a pupil of Ridge Experimental School, said although he was aware of the strike their parents asked them to attend school to verify the truth.

Madam Ama Grace, a parent, appealed to the government to solve the problem since the strike would have negative impact on education in the country.
