Police slams US Peace corps for withdrawal of volunteers

Police in the Upper West region have described as trivial, the decision by the US Peace Corps to withdraw volunteers and suspend their services in the region following an attack on some of them last weekend.

Officials of the Peace Corps told XYZ News that they will be meeting with the security apparatus in Upper West after the murder of a suspected armed robber by one of the Volunteers.

The deceased allegedly attempted to rob two Peace Corps Volunteers in the regional capital Wa but lost his life after one of the volunteer stabbed the robber in defense of his life.

In view of the incident, all Peace Corps Volunteers were removed from the Upper West Region until further notice.

But Police commander for the Upper West, DCOP Adai Acheampong in an interview with XYZ News said the issue was blown out of proportion.

He said his region is one of the safest in Ghana and is asking the Peace Corps volunteers to resume their services.

“This incident that happened happens everywhere and I don’t think that their lives are in danger because Upper West is the safest region among all the regions” DCOP Acheampong said.**
