A traditional ruler in the Upper West Region has suggested to the Ghana Education Service (GES) to post teachers per class at the primary school level and per subject at the Junior High School (JHS) level.
“It is also a major contributory factor to the falling standards of education at the basic school level,” Kuoro Nlowie Baninye, the Acting President of the Buwa Traditional Council and the Divisional Chief of Niator in the Sissala West District, told the GNA in an interview.
Kuoro Nlowie Baninye explained that the pupil/teacher ratio criteria of posting teachers brought about shortage of teachers in many basic schools leading to one teacher combining two to three classes at the primary level and one teacher taking two or three subjects at the JHS level.
“We need to adopt a more appropriate system of posting teachers to schools to help address the falling standards of education,” Kuoro Barecheh Nlowie Baninye said.
“Using pupil/teacher ratio as a bench mark for posting teachers to schools is contributing to ineffective teaching and causing pupils to drop out of school,” he claimed.**
