Spirit FM exposes youth to negative effects of movies and music

Mr Johnson Appiakorang, General Manager of Spirit FM, a Kumasi-based radio station, has urged the youth to be circumspect about the type of music and movies they patronize.

The Ghanaian society, he said, had for some time now been inundated with some Western brand of music and movies whose contents were at variance with the cultural values, norms and dignity of the people.

Mr Appiakorang was inaugurating a pro-youth project dubbed “Spirit FM 4-14 Window”, at the SSNIT Conference Hall in Kumasi. It is a programme that seeks to use the mass media, workshops and talk shows to sensitizing the youth about the negative effects of music and movies.

He said the contents in some of the music and movies had been crafted by the artistes in a manner that, to a large extent creates the impression that vices like drug addiction, rebellion, occultism, homosexuality and lesbianism, greed and gangsterism were normal things in life.

Mr Appiakorang decried how a majority of the youth had copied blindly from some of those Western artistes, as they had fallen prey to what they hear and see, adding that, this was partly responsible for the ascendancy in vices among the youth and their attendant negative consequences on the society.

He said music for instance, had a direct influence on the lives of listeners and therefore, the youth should be taught to make informed decisions in the selection of what they listened to.

Maame Yaa Tiwaa, a Resource Person of the Project, advised the youth to be God-fearing and also law-abiding to enhance their development.**
