Community Involvement is key to Malaria Elimination – ECOWAS

Cotonou, Benin, Dec 1, GNA – Participants at a Technical Meeting on Malaria Vector Control organized by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Cotonou, Benin, on Thursday said involving community members in malaria control programmes was key to the elimination of the disease.

Mr Balla Kandeh, Official of the National Malaria Control Programme in The Gambia, who read a communiqu=E9 at a closing ceremony, appealed to member states to pay attention to community involvement to ensure the success of malaria elimination in the sub-region by 2015. ECOWAS has adopted another intervention that is the use of biolarvicide, a kind of insecticide that kills the mosquito larvae – newly hatched mosquitoes, to help in the elimination of Malaria from the sub-region.
