Sunyani, Nov.28, GNA – Mr. Yaw Manu, Acting Brong Ahafo Regional Director of Education, has urged science teachers to impact to the youth scientific knowledge with the aim of making them innovative enough to sustainably manage the environment.
He said science and technology education is a powerful tool for sensitizing students and the public to among others manage waste through segregation as other developed countries had been doing.
Mr Manu was addressing more than 200 participants made up of headmasters, science tutors, students and pupils at the launch of the National Science Week of the Ghana Association of Science Teachers (GAST) in Sunyani under the theme: 93Innovations in science and technology education, a tool for garbage management”.
The acting Regional Director emphasized that if waste was managed separately at source, it would facilitate recycling activities and this is needed to be taught in schools.
“These would go a long way to create awareness of how students and people can manage waste in our society and change the attitude of the average Ghanaian on littering”, he added.
Mr. Manu emphasized that it was not the responsibility of only the Government to solve the problem of garbage management, which costs the nation huge sums of money yearly.
Rev. Canon Timothy Kankam, Sunyani Municipal Director of Education, stressed the need for science teachers to assist children to build on their science and technological capacities.
He urged the teachers to be more practical in their teaching methods to be able to eradicate the stigma attached to the subject.
Dr. Christian Anthony-Krueger, national president, reiterated the need for the Ministry of Education (MoE) through the Ghana Education Service (GES) to enhance science and technology education by establishing mobile science laboratories, an innovation to provide basic materials to augment the efforts of science teachers in less endowed schools in conducting practical science lessons.
